I've watched custom-home projects in rural Tulare County sit dead in the water for eight to twelve weeks — not because of framing, not because of permits, but because nobody called PG&E early enough. Why PG&E coordination has to start before you break ground

PG&E doesn't spontaneously know you're building. Nothing happens until you trigger it — and in Central Valley rural areas, their construction queue can be backed up six to ten weeks during peak season (spring and early summer). A 5-acre parcel outside Hanford, a remote buildable lot near Exeter, a foothill property in Lindsay: each one needs its own individual service extension, and each one is a little different.

That's why I tell clients to open the conversation with PG&E before permitting is complete — ideally the moment they own the lot. It costs nothing extra to start early, and it can put you a month and a half ahead in the queue. What PG&E actually needs from you (and when)

To get the process moving, PG&E needs a handful of specific things:

  1. A completed application for electric service. You submit a request online, through a PG&E office, or through your builder. It asks for the property address, the distance to the nearest pole, whether you want overhead or underground service, your estimated load (usually 200 amps for a residential build), and where on the site the service should land.
  2. A site plan or simple sketch. Not architectural detail — just a drawing showing where the meter and main panel will sit relative to the property line and the nearest existing pole. PG&E uses it to estimate how many poles and how much wire they'll need.
  3. Payment for the extension. This is the part that surprises people. PG&E does not absorb the cost. If your build is 300 feet from the nearest service point, you pay for 300 feet of new poles and wire. More on pricing below.
  4. A mailing address. PG&E mails your estimate, safety notices, and coordination details, so they need somewhere to reach you.

Once they have your request, PG&E typically returns an estimate within 10 to 14 days. You then have 30 days to accept or decline. Accept, and they schedule a construction date — which is where the real waiting begins.

Real costs for a service extension in the rural Central Valley

Here's what we've seen on recent builds across Tulare, Fresno, and Kings County. These are planning ranges — every parcel is different — but they'll frame your budget honestly.

A lot 700 feet from the nearest PG&E line in rural Dinuba or Porterville can easily run $60,000 to $90,000 just for the extension. We had one foothill build near Exeter where the service run was 900 feet — the final cost came in around $108,000. Underground always costs more, because PG&E has to trench and conduit the wire and they charge for that labor. What actually drives your number is whether they can reuse a nearby pole or have to build new ones and set transformers — and that's determined by your site plan.

The real-world timeline for a rural build

The rule of thumb: request service in January for a spring build and you're fine. Request in April for a May start and you're already cutting it close. June-through-August requests on rural service often don't get installed until September or October. What the plan reviewer will ask for

During building-permit review, your county or city plan checker will want evidence you've requested electric service. That usually means a copy of the PG&E estimate, a letter confirming service is available to the address, or the service-request form showing PG&E received it. Building in unincorporated Tulare County doesn't exempt you — rural Fresno and Kings County builds carry the same requirement. PG&E requirements specific to new construction

New homes built to current Title 24 standards must be solar-ready. That doesn't mean you install panels — it means the house is designed so solar can be added later without major rewiring. In practice, for PG&E coordination, that means a dedicated conditioned circuit run from the panel toward the future solar location, proper labeling and documentation in your electrical plan, and a meter and panel rated to handle future solar (200-amp service generally does). Your electrician and PG&E sort this out during rough-in. It adds maybe $2,000 to $3,500 to the electrical budget, and it's non-negotiable on any new California build.

Rarely, a remote parcel doesn't qualify for a standard extension — it's too far (1,500+ feet) or in an area PG&E doesn't serve. When that happens, you have two paths. You can request a special extension, where PG&E will sometimes build to a remote property if the cost is shared or you accept extraordinary charges (expensive and slow). Or you go off-grid with solar, battery, and propane for a truly remote build — capital-intensive and not the mainstream choice, but workable. On a rural Central Valley build, the electric service extension is one of the biggest hidden variables in both your budget and your schedule — and it's almost entirely front-loaded. Get an honest read on how far you are from the nearest line, verify that the parcel isn't already served, submit your PG&E request the day you can rather than the day you need it, and get the estimate paperwork into your permit folder early. Do that, and a process that stalls other people's projects for months becomes a line item you scheduled around from the start.
